Fair, there will be some people who aren’t into some of it, but I bloody love it, and I love bands that are pushing the envelope of what it means to be a heavy band and make heavy music. The band's sophomore effort This Is Bat Country is a collection of lively pop-rock numbers and rock-driven ballads about obsessive love and girls that apparently utterly fascinate singer and guitarist Shaun Diviney. That is not to suggest, though, that the lyrics are corny and one-dimensional; although still relatable enough to suit the pop-rock style of the band, they are delivered in a slightly obscure fashion that leaves something to the imagination. This Is Bat Country contrasts rockier tracks like Are You Afraid Of The Dark' and guitar-driven numbers such as Jack The Ripper with softer ballads such as Werewolves and Ruby Red. One thing that remains invariable across all tracks, however, is Short Stack's incredible ability to create hooks that compel you to sing along.

Written and created in Paris, France with a band of brothers; new friends and old, more than 24 musicians collaborating on the album. From his partners in The Frames (Joe Doyle) and Swell Season (Marketa Irglova & Joe Doyle), to his touring family of players , to three Iranian brothers he met in Paris (the Kroshravesh brothers) , Glen brought together a group of global talents who each left an indelible mark on this recording. ôIt became quickly apparent in the studio we were onto something interesting. I was finding new ways into the existing songs and we were improvising new ideas every day. When you surround yourself with great musicians and do your best to keep up, stay loose, give little direction, and allow everyone to bring what they bring, something transformative may happen. This collection of songs is mainly made up of those that came through while improvising and following the melodic lines and threads. Sometimes when you take a small musical fragment and you care for it, follow it, and build it up slowly, it can become a thing of wonder. In this sense, some of these songs weren't written in the traditional form; they were ideas followed to a conclusion. I want to thank all these great musicians for coming and giving these songs their best. All a song wants is to be heard. I hope something in this music can be of use to you. I know its been of great use to me to make it. Beauty is in the ear of the behearer.

This is the first time Frontierland has been made available on vinyl. The original artwork has been reimaged and the newly remastered LP comes on standard black vinyl, in a deluxe gatefold sleeve.

Originally released in Australia, the USA and Britain in 1996 Frontierland has never been available on vinyl and never available on the streaming services. The album has been out of print in all formats for over 25 years. Frontierland is an expansive and at times highly experimental pop album. It’s a broad ranging work, with a sweeping sound pallet that includes horns, mandolin, mellotron, chromatic harmonica, loops and samples, violin, drums and octopad alongside Ed’s unmistakeable guitar and vocals. Allmusic acclaimed it as a work that singled Kuepper out as “one of the most valuable, idiosyncratic rock artists of the late 20th century.” Frontierland was nominated for Best Independent Release at the ARIA Music Awards in 1997.

VOLUMES: ONE, the first non-studio release from Bon Iver, captures 10 distinctive live performances, recorded between 2019 and 2023, showcasing Justin Vernon and his band at their most whole. There’s a warmth and exuberance across the album, as well as the sort of muscular sound you can really only get at a live show. For the uninitiated and die-hards alike, these recordings could well be the defining versions of the tracks, no doubt made possible through the essential live engineering of Xandy Whitesel and performances from bandmates Jenn Wasner, Sean Carey, Michael Lewis, Matthew McCaughan, and Andrew Fitzpatrick. Vernon began working on VOLUMES: ONE in 2020, and he spent a considerable amount of time combing through concerts to pull out the right songs to define Bon Iver. “This is what we became,” Vernon comments. “This is really us at our best. This is it.” VOLUMES: ONE, as a result, is something greater than a compilation or live album. It’s entirely new but still familiar, offering a prismatic look at an old friend, seeing them for who they were and who they are, all the goodness of which they’re capable but maybe too shy to show at times. With VOLUMES: ONE, Vernon begins a new Bon Iver archival series that he’s modeled after Bob Dylan’s iconic Bootleg Series and the ever-delivering Neil Young Archives. Bon Iver returns with their first full album since 2019, SABLE, fABLE!

Bon Iver’s three-song collection SABLE, was a prologue mired in darkness, a controlled burn clearing the way for new possibilities. fABLE is the book that follows. Where SABLE, was a work of solitude, fABLE is an outstretched hand. Radiant, ornate pop music gleams around Vernon’s voice as he focuses on a new and beautiful era.

On every song, his eyes are locked with one specific person. It’s love, which means there’s an intense clarity, focus, and honesty within fABLE. It’s a portrait of a man flooded and overwhelmed by that first meeting (“Everything Is Peaceful Love”). There’s a tableau defined by sex and irrepressible desire (“Walk Home”). This is someone filled with light and purpose seeing an entire future right in front of him: a partner, new memories, maybe a family.

There’s something undeniably healing about infatuation. Cleaving to someone else can feel like light pouring in from a door that’s suddenly swung wide. But there’s a reason SABLE, is of a piece with fABLE; the shadow still rears its head in lighter times. Even when you’ve reached a new chapter, you’ll still find yourself back in your own foundational muck. A fable isn’t a fairy tale. There’s good stuff: unbridled joy and trips to Spain. But fables aren’t hinged on happy endings; they’re here to instill a lesson.

As the album winds to a close, he acknowledges the need for patience and a commitment to put in the work. There’s a selfless rhythm required when you’re enmeshing yourself with another person. The song - and by extension the entire album - is a pledge. He’s ready to find that pace.

Vinyl LP pressing. 22 stands for Justin Vernon. The number's recurrence in his life has become a meaningful pattern through encounter and recognition. A mile marker, a jersey number, a bill total. The reflection of '2' is his identity bound up in duality: the relationship he has with himself and the relationship he has with the rest of the world. A Million is the rest of that world: the millions of people who we will never know, the infinite and the endless, everything outside one's self that makes you who you are. The other side of Justin's duality is the thing that completes him and what he searches for. 22, A Million is thus part love letter, part final resting place of two decades of searching for self-understanding like a religion. And the inner-resolution of maybe never finding that understanding. When Justin sings, "I'm still standing in the need of prayer" he begs the question of what's worth worshipping, or rather, what is possible to worship. If music is a sacred form of discovering, knowing and being, then Bon Iver's albums are totems to that faith. The poly-fi record formed at the congruence of a bold yet delicate sonic palette. These sounds were the way out from the suffocating enclosure and captivity of anxiety. The ten songs of 22, A Million are a collection of sacred moments, love's torment and salvation, contexts of intense memories, signs that you can pin meaning onto or disregard coincidence. If 2011's Bon Iver, Bon Iver built a habitat rooted in physical spaces, then 22, A Million is the letting go of that attachment to a place.

In the spring of 2025, right around the release of Possession, Ty Segall started hearing voices, calmly at first, but soon screaming: “Get the band back together!!!” Immediately, his mind began working, creating, collecting and collating riffs for songs, an album that he and the band—Ben Boye, Evan Burrows, Mikal Cronin & Emmett Kelly—will come to all call Chrome. Chrome—the element, not the album  —is shiny, reflective, resistant to corrosion. Chrome the album’s got that too: in hard-springing rock strung with lyrically allusive passages moving furtive and bleak through labyrinthine paths in the darkness. Joining social phenomena and autobiographical dream imagery in song-sequenced, head-snapping flashes, hitting left/right hemispheres fast and furiously. In massive riffs and thudding power in the rhythm core, twin-guitar attack and parry, tightly arrayed lines of fuzz distortion, keyboard textures of bright and thickness. Prison’s third big one, Big Rigs on the BQE, finds our jammers of legend far away—miles from Downstate (2025) and Upstate (2023): driving further down the road, Prison’s guitar, bass and drums compel them to dream LOUD. An improvised rock and roll tapestry, multiple impulses, intersections and lifelines rended with gas ‘n guitar pedal on down to the metal. Reflecting real lives lived today, sprawled and recalled in undulating electroacoustic performance. On March 7th 2024, Prison vets Sarim Al-Rawi, Matt Lilly and Paul Major on guitars & drums were joined by Mike Donovan on fuzz organ, percussionist Ryan Sawyer and Downstate’s Matt Leibowitz (back on bass, and synth too this time) at a Sunset Park studio where they could see the fucking highway from the studio windows. It kind of set the tone. Downstate guitarist Adam Reich switched it up too; as studio honcho/engineer/mixer, he scored a couple fx/remix passages that are of the performance on both sides. Big Rigs on the BQE is the sound of Sarim, Matt, Paul, Mike, Ryan, Matt and Adam in wicked battle and glorious play, a far-ranging scrum of Groundhogs/Velvets/Hampton’s/Pink Fairies/Magic Band/ Good Rats/Can propositions powering guitars, bass, drums and organ (&synth!) that day: a beast, imagining a better allegory for qualities of the ‘spirit of the jam/road trip’ duality. Paul and Sarim’s vocal shouts transmit a kind of road-thoughts as they come, circular processing loosely knotted loops in different ranges and a couple different levels! These are deep, searing, multipurpose jams. Big Rigs on the BQE is a kind of travelogue, two side-long trips that take flight and fight another day in the never-ending process. It’s a beautiful opportunity to send new blasts of positive energy out to the world. Prison of one, freedom of many!

Arriving right on time for its 20th anniversary, Faun Fables’ musical theater work The Transit Rider returns in a lovely 2xLP vinyl edition that dimensionally burnishes the bristling perfor- mances and elevated chamber/cabaret folk sounds of the original CD-only release. At once a work of theatre, allegory and auto- biography, The Transit Rider amplifies Faun Fables’ distinctive electroacoustic wash of Anglo-European folk sounds, shimmering allusively from traditional to Kurt Weill to folk-rock and back again. The route that led to The Transit Rider goes back even further than 2006; it was first embarked upon in the early ‘90s, when Dawn McCarthy moved to NYC and was introduced to the transient and constant glories of its sub- way system, a massive world unto itself. As she rode the trains, the subterranean, sing- ing landscape suggested a journey in song: a rider aboard a ubiquitous transit system, a network of rails, roads, corridors and trails extending in all directions, meeting itself again on the far side of the world. Upon this endless circuitous path, she encounters characters that may or may not help her search to find a clearing amid this mass of machinery and humanity in which to stop and have a picnic.

Time stands stunningly still on The Final Paint ing, the dreamy, elegiac final album from leg endary underground singer-songwriter/poet/ painter Ed Askew. Ed started his singing career in 1968 with a self-titled LP release on NYC’s infamous free jazz/free-folk ESP-Disk' label. Known today as Ask the Unicorn, this album is wintry psych folk of the highest order, with Ed’s yearning lyrics and high-strung vocals fully emoting over the bright, mandolin-like strum of his chosen axe, the South American tiple. The record caused a flare of acclaim, but after a second album went unreleased, Ed went back home to Connecticut, where, quietly and locally, he taught art, painted (houses AND paintings) and made music. Upon returning to New York in the early ‘80s, he began cir culating cassettes of his self-recorded new songs. This was a fascinating and unlikely new chapter in his music, but only a few noticed. It wasn’t until De Stijl’s 2002 release of Little Eyes, his lost second album, that his naïve songs and singing began to receive the respect they deserved. It was just enough visibility to dream a bit bigger.

Sir Richard Bishop returns for a new spon- taneous six-string meshing of people’s music, recollections and psychic intentions. Are y’all ready for some Hillbilly Erotica? Migration from last album’s Ragas to this new Erotica is another chapter in Bish- op’s progress, drifting via songs into the further frontiers of his pappy’s hometown sounds, trancing over and out in their hand-me-down clothes. As with the ragas, the ‘rotica’s hung round the neck of John Fahey’s infamous dubbing of certain tradi- tional American folk sounds as “American Primitive.” A perfectly good thought, but Sir Richard picks his own axe and chose a separate path. Rushing through gutters & picking pickled brains in the saucy head- waters of the down-low & literal American primitive, his hillbilly music is a mash of brined cultural inheritance, mini-ragas and moonshine-drunk savagery breaking out on the frets.

Stash is part guitar and keyboard recital, part unbridled electroacoustic assembly of spontaneous international deep and wide sounds. Happening between them, somehow. Like the time: guitar and keyboard pushing, then pulling back in space. The sound of two people agreeing on this. Patterns emerge, units form, and then, we feel BCMC alive in the wide-open air of the room. Also in Stash: written things, shorter strands, riffs, prog/funk/church organ breaks, psychedelic blues-rock soloing on synth. Tommy Peltier's Echo Park, compiled of unheard tapes from the early/mid 1970s, brings us into contact with a long-extinct creature—equal parts slinky hipster, uni- versal soldier of the heart and snuggly loverman—the light-rockin’ tinseltown troubadour, the likes of which hasn’t been served around Hollywood since 1979! Tom- my’s somewhere in the tuneful tradition of Rupert Holmes, Stephen Bishop, Andrew Gold, David Batteau and of course, Cap- tain Fantastic and the Thin White Duke. His soulful songs and high-pitched vocals (he was once called “Tom Rapp on helium”) are paired with the requisite chopsy, jazz-en- riched LA players, entrancing the ear with grooves and performances both tasty and sweet. Mixed and mastered with great zest by Jim O’Rourke (he brought new life to recordings of a similar vintage for Judee Sill’s posthumous Dreams Come True back in 2005), Echo Park is an encompassing trip through a whole other time and place. A trumpet player since childhood, Tommy felt no need for pop music; he’d come of age during the west coast jazz explosion of the 1950s, hearing Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker’s legendary performances at The Haig Club, just a mile west of MacArthur Park.
